Infantry assault groups were used by the Soviet Army to destroy enemy fortifications and engage in urban combat. They proved their effectiveness during the assaults on Berlin, Königsberg, and other German cities. They were typically armed with PPSh and PPS submachine guns, Goryunov heavy machine guns, backpack flamethrowers, grenades, and explosive charges. They could also be reinforced with IS-2 tanks, ISU-152 self-propelled guns, and ZiS-3, M-30 and B-4 guns.
