38-301A - BR OTA Timber Wagon EWS [WL] - 38-301A
BR OTA Timber Wagon EWS [WL]
During the late-1980s and with an increase in felled timber traffic BR created the OTA Timber Wagons by converting redundant OBA, OCA and VDA wagons. Wagons converted from VDA retained the VDA van ends with their curved tops and it is these conversions that the Bachmann Branchline model depicts. With the van sides and roof removed, stanchions were added, eight on each side, between which the timber would be loaded. Strongly associated with operations in Scotland, carrying timber from the foresting areas of the Scottish Highlands, the wagons have also worked in other areas of the UK and travel across the network to deliver their cargo to paper mills.
The Bachmann Branchline model captures the skeletal nature of the prototype, with the thin deck and solebars and adjoining ends all moulded crisply along with separate stanchions which plug into the stanchion pockets with a reassuringly positive fit. Other separately fitted details include the lamp brackets, brake equipment and handbrake levers, whilst metal buffer heads can be found at each end of the model.
